Amy’s Army of Cancer Warriors has a passionate commitment to advancing life-saving, groundbreaking cancer research at VCU Massey Cancer Center. We are dedicated to increasing awareness about cancer research and prevention. In addition to funding research, Amy’s Army also works to enhance patient access for treatment. Because Amy’s Army of Cancer Warriors is a registered 501(c)(3) charity, your donations are tax-deductible.
Amy’s Army of Cancer Warriors was developed by a group of friends who coalesced around the idea of promoting cancer prevention and research. It is a grassroots fundraising team that produces events to provide much-needed funds for cancer research and support for the jewel of RVA that is Massey Cancer Center.
In 2015, Amy’s Army of Cancer Warriors held the first Pedal through Petals. The casual bike ride started and ended in Amy’s backyard and stopped in various gardens along the way. We figured we’d be successful if 40 or 50 joined us for this ride, designed to emphasize healthy exercise and raise money for cancer research at Massey Cancer Center in RVA. More than 100 people bought tickets for the ride that year, and dozens more volunteered to help the cause. We raised over $9,000.
The next year, 2016, we knew Amy’s backyard would be too small for Pedals. Isley Brewing Company opened its arms to our group, so we started and finished there and everyone enjoyed incredible hospitality and beer after the ride. Our attendance increased, and we raised $12,000, a nice increase from the first year.
In 2017, our host for Pedal through Petals was The Valentine. We closed the entire block in front of the Valentine and dubbed it “Party Central.” The bike ride toured both Church Hill and downtown, including Massey’s own “Healing Garden.” More than 220 riders paid to join us for the event, and once again we had dozens of incredible volunteers. Party Central featured not only beer and wine, but also food trucks, and live bands. We even had a “Family Fun Zone.” Thanks in part to a very generous challenge grant, we raised $18,800.
2017 also was our first year to host Climb to Conquer Cancer. It is also a bike ride, but it appeals to the more competitive cyclist. Riders choose to ride between 26 and 63 miles in total, but the highlight of every ride is a competitive climb up Libby Hill. And the highlight of the event, for cyclists, volunteers, and spectators, is the award ceremony, where the strongest cyclists earn red polka dot jerseys reminiscent of those awarded to the “King of the Mountain” at the Tour de France. Our own King of the Mountain and Queen of the Mountain receive their awards from “Podium Girls,” which, in our case, are little girls, wearing red polka dot dresses, who are fighting their own battles with cancer. At Climb to Conquer Cancer, we raised $8500, which we donated to Massey Cancer Center and earmarked for (1) pediatric research, in honor of our Podium Girls, (2) Transportation Disparities funding, and (3) Cancer Disparities Research, led by Dr. Vanessa Sheppard.
In 2018, we are planning
- Fourth Annual Pedal through Petals on Sunday, April 29th
- Second Annual Climb To Conquer Cancer on Saturday, September 22nd
We also have several other developments in the hopper, so stay tuned!
